When should I begin the admission process?
Most families begin the admission process the fall before the enrollment year. You should contact the Admission Office to get on the mailing list, to receive application materials, to RSVP for an open house, or to arrange for a tour.
What grade is the best grade to apply for?
We welcome applications at every grade level. However the largest number of openings occur at pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grade 5.
What will my child’s visit be like?
Children applying to pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and grade 1 spend the morning (8:15 to 11:30 a.m.) in the classroom setting. The teacher will pair your child with a “big buddy” who will befriend your child during the day. Applicants participate in free play, circle time, a teacher-led lesson, recess, and perhaps a “special” class like art, music, or Spanish. A snack will also be provided. During the visit, a member of the admission staff will complete a readiness assessment with your child.
As an alternative to an individual visit, applicants to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten can participate in a group playdate in December or January. The teachers simulate a class experience with free play, circle time, and a teacher-led activity. Pre-K playdates are scheduled for December 7, 2012; January 11, 2013; and January 25, 2013. Kindergarten playdates are scheduled for December 14, 2012; January 18, 2013; and February 1, 2013.
Children applying to grades 2 through 8 spend one school day with us (8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). They should bring a snack, lunch, writing materials, and a book for silent reading. Applicants visit with their current grade (not the grade to which they are applying). A member of the admission staff may observe in the classroom setting and will complete testing with your child.
What will the parent interview be like?
Parents meet with members of the admission staff for about 20-30 minutes on the day of their child’s visit. We want to know what you are seeking in a school, what strengths your child possesses, as well as any challenges your child may be facing. We want to share with you information about Greene Street and answer any questions you may have.
When will I know if my child has been admitted?
You should aim to complete the admission process by mid-January. The admission committee gathers in late-January to make decisions, and families are notified soon after. Applicants received or completed in February and beyond are considered if spaces are still available.
When should I apply for financial aid?
You should apply for financial aid at the same time you are going through the admission process. If you have completed the financial aid process, you may be notified of a grant at the same time as your admission decision.
