Horizons hosted at Greene Street Friends School (HGSFS) is an amazing summer enrichment program that helps build brighter futures for children living in poverty in the Germantown are of Philadelphia. Modeled after the national Horizons Student Enrichment Program, Horizons’ intensive six-week summer program is designed to prevent summer learning loss in academic performance and close opportunity and achievement gaps that often exist in the intersection between resource inequity in schools and poverty. Working in partnership with Horizons families, the John Wister School and surrounding neighborhood public schools, and the host school, Horizons at HGSFS is committed to developing the whole child and offers activities that promote higher-level thinking and perspective, leadership development and boost self-efficacy – all while raising student aspirations and expectations for their lives. Position Summary

Horizons at HGSFS is looking for a motivated, committed individual who is passionate about making a difference and receiving higher than entry-level responsibilities. The candidate should have some volunteer/professional experience as well as the desire to take on responsibilities that will challenge themselves and make an impact on the Germantown neighborhood in Philadelphia. The AmeriCorps VISTA position and the individual will work directly with the Executive Director of the program at Horizons hosted at Greene Street Friends School.

 

Position Hours

This is a full time, seasonal position beginning June 3rd 2019 and concluding on August 9th 2019 (main student portion runs from June 24-August 2).

 

AmeriCorps VISTA responsibilities during the school year:

The Horizons AmeriCorps member will be a valued member of the team with responsibilities that are critical to ensuring success of the program during the summer of 2019 and beyond. The AmeriCorps member will help communicate the Horizons story by:

·         Capturing pictures and video of classroom and enrichment activities, swimming and field experiences

·         Uploading and organizing those pictures/videos to be utilized for summer and future communications

·         Partnering with the Executive Director to create and send out weekly family and donor newsletters

 

Additionally, the AmeriCorps member will assist with the following duties:

·         Work with the Site Director to coordinate schedules with other on-site summer programs to optimize the student experience and access to outdoor space

·         Assist students in the library to check-out books Lead efforts to create a safe and structured recess time

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         18 years or older

·         High School Graduate/GED

·         Passionate about education and social justice issues

·         Thrives in small team settings

·         Self-motivated and comfortable working independently

·         Some volunteer/professional experience

·         Knowledge of all Microsoft programs, as well as Google systems

Program Stipend & Benefits: Living Allowance, Education award upon successful completion of service.
