Building a Caring CommunityDuring Courageous Community Week, Greene Street students thought about what actions help build a caring community. In connection with this, third graders and their first grade partners constructed structures with strong foundations. This hands-on activity helped them understand the necessity of a strong foundation when building a sturdy structure. Students then thought about how our kind actions can be the strong foundation for a caring community at Greene Street Friends School. David Chiles, the volunteer coordinator at Philabundance, came in to talk with third and fourth grade students about the organization and the way it helps Philadelphians care for other Philadelphians. Maggie asked her class what they learned about the organization the following day. Here are some of their responses. -They give food to those who need it. -They want to end food insecurity. -They work in our region, including Bucks and Delaware County. -They work with other food agencies like St. Vincents. -They give food to food deserts (a place with no supermarket in the area). -Half of the people they serve have jobs but don't get paid enough. -1 million people in our area are food insecure. |
