Reading is Greene Street Friends School's Cup of TeaThree Cups of Tea, the first book in a three-book community read series, will be discussed on Sunday, September 27, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Social Room of the Green Street Meetinghouse, 45 West School House Lane in Germantown. The event is jointly sponsored by Greene Street Friends School, the GSFS Parents Association and the Outreach Committee of Green Street Monthly Meeting. All are welcome to attend. In Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time, Greg Mortenson and journalist David Oliver Relin recount the journey that let Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan's K2, the world's second-highest mountain, to successfully establish schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. By replacing guns with pencils and rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge of the third-world to promote peace. This is both an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man really is changing the world -- one school at a time. The book was selected by Greene Street Friends School faculty and staff for their annual summer reading. It is also available in young adult and picture book versions, so readers of all ages can take part. Click here to learn more about Greg Mortenson and Three Cups of Tea. The second Community Book Read event will take place in February 2010 and the third will take place in May 2010.
