New Property -- New Possibilities

On December 31, 2008, Green Street Monthly Meeting purchased for the School the large piece of land on the corner of School House Lane and Germantown Avenue that we have long referred to as the bank property.

A gift to the School eight years ago from a graduate made this acquisition possible. The gift was specifically for this purpose, to be used whenever the land came up for sale.

Opportunities for expanding the campus seldom arise, because Greene Street is in a densely populated urban setting. The Lower School on Greene Street was once the School’s only building, but the School has grown, and now fronts on all four surrounding streets.

The property is now occupied by Citizens Bank, which is a long-term tenant, so we have the time to plan carefully for the property’s development and make much-needed program enhancements: green space and outdoor play areas, a gymnasium and performing arts center, and additional classrooms. School and Meeting leaders are excited by these possibilities and have begun a new phase of long-range planning led by the Futures Committee.

Capital Improvements Continue

The $1.3 million Landmark of Learning Campaign is still funding improvements on campus. This summer all of the classrooms in the Lower School will be packed up while the floors are refinished, rooms repainted and stairway spindles replaced. Already the Landmark of Learning Campaign funded new signs throughout campus and, in the Lower School building, new heating, cooling, lighting and electrical systems as well as exterior painting.
