PA Leadership

Here are some of the events and projects in the works for 2009-2010. Join one of the Ad Hoc Teams to help make it happen.

Parents Association Family Dinners: The Back-To-School Family Dinner is Friday, September 11 at 5:30 pm. (Rain date Monday, September 14). Want to help out? Contact Leslie Klinefelter, Room Parent Coordinator. A wonderful and delicious way to start the new year!

On Friday, June 4, we will celebrate the year’s end and welcome new families at the Stan Kenyon Year End Family Dinner, this event is jointly sponsored by the Parents Association and the Admission Office.

Fundraising: Join the team and find some green! Stay tuned for upcoming fundraisers - bulb and plant sales, a 76ers game, tie-dye T-shirts.

Grounds and Greening: Here's a summary of what we started last year and would like to continue.

Organized fall, winter, and spring clean-ups and plantings. Major work in bank parking lot.

Won grant for the "Greening of Greene Street" project. The grant is for $15,000 in professional architectural, design and environmental expertise from the Community Design Collaborative. The Parents Association donated $1,000 in matching funds.

Organized Task Force with parents, students, teachers, administrators, and Meeting members to work with the Design Collaborative on a plan that encompasses input from every constituency. The plan is being finalized now and will include immediate, mid-term and long-term proposals to create more green space and new play elements, better use play areas, and improve storm water management. This design phase is the starting point. We will need more input and agreement among everyone before we move to an implementation phase, which will require fundraising as well. Some short term ideas like plantings and painting lines for games can hopefully happen this summer.

NEW! Community Book Read:

The Community Read co-hosted this past year by the PA and the GSFS Meeting was such a success that the plan now is to organize three this year – including with the Greene Street School staff and faculty.

First Community Read:  Sunday, September 27, 12:30pm – 2:30pm.
First book: Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson.  Other books and dates to be announced.

Holiday Giving:
Last year we collected and delivered car loads of holiday gifts for women and children living at a local shelter run by Woment Against Abuse and boxes of food for the Germantown Crises Ministry at the First Presbyterian Church in Germantown. Join the team to plan this year's outreach.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service:
This year will be the 11th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at Greene Street Friends School.   Hundreds of students, parents, grandparents, teachers, Meeting members and alumni participate in several projects, including: assembling breakfast bags and health kits, making clay bowls, paper flowers and good wish cards, cleaning the grounds of the school and neighborhood, sorting boxes and boxes of donations, and giving many pints of life-saving blood.

This year we are looking to add some new direct service and hands-on projects.  Ideas?  Want to help out?  Join the team.

Family Black History Celebration:
Last year the team organized a Community Read; led Lower School and Middle School Assemblies on Black History, developed a Black History quiz for the whole family, organized Family Black History Fun Night which included an art and artifact gallery, soul food potluck, drumming and storytelling, and also a pageant for every age.

Saturday, February 20th is the date for at least part of our Black History celebration this year.  Join the team and help design and plan this year’s event.

Dining In with Greene Street Friends:

A fun, relaxing and delicious way to meet other Greene Street families.  Some families host and others are guests.  Likely on Friday and Saturday evenings in March.  Join the fun – be a host or be a guest!

Parent-led Student Electives:

We’re looking for parents, guardians and grandparents that have hobbies or professions that you would like to teach to Greene Street students. Last year we piloted these parent-led student electives on an early dismissal day in April. Forty students had a blast learning about video making, chess, cooking, and yoga.  Interested in sharing your talent?  Contact electives coordinator David Bradley

Parent Education:

This year’s team will organize dynamic and thought-provoking discussions and presentations on topics relevant to us as parents.

Last year we held a workshop titled "The Social/Emotional Development of Kids."  GSFS School Counselor, Kathleen Walls, was the presenter and led a lively discussion with 30 parents.

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon:

To show our appreciation for the amazing and hard-working teachers and staff at Greene Street, the Parents Association hosts a delicious, relaxing luncheon in May. We welcome volunteers who can help out serving, baking and cleaning.

NEW! Tree Planting:

If approved by the Tree Vitalize program, we will be planting dozens of street trees in front of the School and around the entire block. Contact Margarent Funderberg if you are interested in helping plant trees this spring.
