Drama and Musical

The Lower School drama performance is held each year in late autumn. Students in grades 3 -5 are welcomed to audition and participate. The performance is all-inclusive as each child receives a role in the production, whether as actors, set designers, and/or stage hands. The directors aim to put on productions that speak to the diversity of the school but allow students to express themselves in a fun and safe atmosphere. Some recent performances include The Land of Dahl (an original play), Kids Say the Darnedest Things (a take on the original show), and The Paper Bag Princess.

The Middle School Musical is open to all students in grades 5-8.  The cast is usually comprised of 30-40 actors. The shows are usually junior versions of hit Broadway shows, meaning that they are shortened to fit within a more manageable time frame (about 1.5 hours long), and some songs are arranged in keys that are better suited for young performers. Recent shows have included: Into The Woods, Hairspray, and Willy Wonka.

Each year, auditions are held at the end of January. Students are asked to prepare a song as well as a short monologue. While participation in the show is open to any student in the middle school, the directors use auditions to help them make casting decisions. During the rehearsal period, all students are supplied with scripts as well as audio tracks, both of which students can use to prepare their roles outside of rehearsal. Rehearsals take place three times a week in preparation of the show. The curtain goes up at the end of April, with three sold-out evening performances.
