Notes from Head of School

Welcome to Greene Street's website!

Greene Street Friends is a school with a long history and a bright future. I have had the good fortune to be Head of School for the past 15 years and bear witness to many wonderful changes.

We have great people, and we also have a clear purpose. This combination makes meaningful change possible and makes being at Greene Street exciting.

  • Nine years ago we built a second pre-kindergarten building and doubled our pre-school program.
  • Eight years ago, we set up our 7th grade Costa Rica exchange program.
  • Six years ago we adopted a new mathematics curriculum and hired a math specialist.
  • Five years ago we initiated Student Meetings for Business in the Middle School, a form of student government using Quaker procedures for facilitating discussions and making decisions.
  • Three years, ago we began teaching a unified set of core lessons in life skills for Grades PK-6.
  • Two years ago we opened a renovated a historic 1833 house that is now serving as the School’s public face, housing our admission, development, and business offices.
  • Two years ago, we purchased a 1.3 acre property next to the school which will serve our future program needs.
  • Last year, we hired an architectural firm, consulted with our school community, and created a plan for new and upgraded facilities over the next 15-20 years.
  • This year, we are beginning a series of fundraising initiatives to actualize our plans for our campus and its facilities.

Greene Street Friends School has an ambitious mission, and we are on the move!

Our successes have come from hard-working and dedicated teachers and staff. In addition we have a core of volunteers who have helped us with every one of these initiatives, including this website. These volunteers include parents, alumni, Meeting members, and even people who just see our school and want to be involved. Great people.

We have developed an ongoing planning approach to identify needs, prioritize them, and implement improvements. We’ve been working this way for many years now, and the results speak for themselves. I invite you to visit and see us in action.

Cordially,

Ed Marshall, Head of School
