Greene Street Friends School to Host Friends Mutual Aid Market

On Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Greene Street Friends School will host a Friends Mutual Aid Market, welcoming neighbors and community members to campus for a day of sharing and connection.

Built on the idea of “give what you can, take what you need,” the Market will offer clothing, books, housewares, and more—free and open to all. The goal is simple: to support one another and make sure resources are shared in ways that meet real needs.

Rooted in Our Values

This event reflects GSFS’s Quaker values—simplicity, integrity, peacefulness, community, equity, and stewardship. Rather than focusing on charity, the Market centers dignity, mutual care, and the belief that everyone has something to offer. Since 1855, GSFS has emphasized not only strong academics but also the importance of ethical action and social responsibility. Hosting a mutual aid event is a natural extension of that mission.

Solidarity Over Charity

Unlike a typical donation drive, the Mutual Aid Market is built on reciprocity. Everyone can participate as both a giver and a receiver. Inspired in part by local initiatives like the Germantown Community Fridge and broader mutual aid networks, the event emphasizes cooperation over competition and collective well-being over individual gain.

Learning Through Experience

Events like this give GSFS students the chance to see (and be part of) real ways communities care for one another. Students will be part of preparing for the event, helping to sort and organize items. We connect classroom learning with meaningful, real-world impact because we want our students to be thoughtful, engaged and responsible citizens of the world.

Reducing Waste

The Market highlights environmental stewardship by promoting reuse and reducing waste. Leftover items will be redistributed to local organizations, ensuring that resources continue to serve the community beyond the day of the event. We remember that spring is a season of renewal and growth. In a time when division can feel overwhelming, the Mutual Aid Market offers a simple but powerful reminder: when we come together, we all have enough.

This event would not made possible without the incredible work and vision of GSFS’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Tricia Ebarvia and Communications Associate, Michi Hunt whose leadership has helped bring the Mutual Aid Market from idea to reality. Together with students, families, and faculty, they have helped shape an event that truly embodies GSFS values—creating space for connection, shared resources, and collective care.
