ALL ABOUT…US
All About Me Brown Bag Project, October 9, 2014
Students in 2S have been spending time in the early weeks of school getting to know each other as a community of learners. The All About Me Brown Bag activity supports Greene Street’s educational philosophy, recognizing the inherent connectedness of the individual and the community. Students have enjoyed brown bag shares from each other, their teachers, and even the Head of Lower and Middle School, Ryan Kimmet. By learning about one another, in our own words and through our chosen items, we are all gaining a deeper understanding of the unique individuals who come together to make the wonderful 2S learning community. Recently, 2S enjoyed learning more about Melody and Jeff as they shared their Brown Bags.
SCIENCE INVESTIGATION
Science Investigation, October 28, 2014
Scientists in 2S asked, “How Do Scientists Think?” They conducted an investigation to find out if food coloring spreads faster in cold water or warm water. After asking the question, students shared their hypothesis. Then they planned a fair test; students added food color to two cups of water, one cold and one warm. Students used their observation skills to report what happened. Our 2S scientists repeated the investigation to check for similar results. Ask your child what they concluded from their investigation.
Math and Science in 2S
Math and Science in 2S, November 23, 2014
2S students are busy in both math and science. In math, students were given the task of identifying and using patterns to solve a number story. Students used the NEARPOD APP on iPads to solve and explain their answers. Nearpod is a great app to use for open response problem solving because it allows students to work and share their creations in real time.
In science, students were presented with building materials to create organizers for Tug and Jane’s (our class hermit crabs) food, water and supplies. Students are studying the Design Process, so used this system to approach their work. Students were given the problem; they needed to design a useful organizer for the hermit crabs’ supplies. Next, students planned and built their creations, using on-hand materials. They showed great teamwork in completing their designs. Check in with your child to see how their designs worked.
Volcanes!
Spanish and Science with a visit between the Costa Rican Students and 2S, November, 2014
2S welcomed the Costa Rican students into their class by sharing their studies of non-fiction reading and scientific writing, focusing on volcanoes. The students studied maps of Costa Rica, learning about the location of the country and its active volcanoes. Together, the students built, and then erupted model volcanoes, while recording their observations.
Reading Buddies in the New Year, 2015
2S was glad to meet with their Reading Buddies for the first time in the new year. As 2S readers are growing stronger and more confident, their reading buddies are more supportive than ever in helping to nurture both the love of reading and the joy of friendship.
