Talking the Talk about Walking the Walk

There’s something powerful about starting the year with “integrity” on the tips of our tongues and with shared understanding of its meaning - doing the right thing, even when it’s hard. It’s my favorite all-school theme so far. I think we should talk about "walking the walk." Here’s my own two cents...

What could be more individual than integrity? Our first two all-school themes - simplicity and peace - as well as our next two - community and equality - all seem to hinge on participation with others, but integrity really puts the “I” right in the middle of SPICE. It feels very action-oriented and home-based. I think our students will really be able to wrap their brains around it.

I affirmed one of my own five-year-old twins recently for showing integrity. “Thanks, mom,” this small person said, very matter-of-factly. Later, curious about a decision made by my other twin (I’m trying so hard to keep their identities a mystery), I asked, “And how is that working out with your integrity?” This twin responded very pragmatically, “Integrity? Oh, that... I ran out of that a while ago.” Okay, so we still have some learning to do!

If you come across an integrity story, please share!
