Greene Street Friends Prepares for Day of Silence

GSAFE (Gender and Sexuality Alliance for Everyone), a student-led group, is once again coordinating the Day of Silence here at Greene Street Friends. Coinciding with GLSEN's National Day of Silence, which you can read more about here, this year's event will take place on Friday, April 12th, in the Middle School. Each year, GSAFE invites fellow Middle School students to join them for a day of silence, remembering all of those who have been silenced because of their sexuality.

After a morning assembly, students are given a sticker to show their participation and remain silent until the end of the day when everyone breaks their silence together. Students explain, "We participate in the Day of Silence because it is a way to show support, validation, and recognition for members of the LGBTQ+ community that are silenced. Sometimes, because of discrimination, it can be hard or even unsafe for LGBTQ+ people to speak their truth."
