Facilitating Discussions on Diversity

Thirteen high school students from Abington Friends School came to GSFS on Wednesday to work first with TORCH representatives and then with the entire middle school. This partnership was sparked by Desmond Daniels, GSFS Class of 2013, who is now a junior at AFS.

Students engaged in activities and games and the debriefed about the experiences they had in them and how those connect to real life. In one game, students were given an animal and told to close their eyes, make noise like the animal, and find the others like them A cacophony of moos, clucks, and donkey brays followed, with the chirp on one lone bird. The game intentionally leaves one student without a "herd," although the chicken could take the lone bird under their "wing" if that occurred to them. Among many other reflections, students spoke about how the loud mooing of the cows (the largest group) was intimidating and made it hard to hear and find others like them.
