Students Explore Poetry and Percussion

GSFS parent Josh Robinson and friends, Jacob and Luke, presented "Poetry Meets Percussion" during the Lower School and Middle School assemblies on Friday morning. The interactive show helped students understand the language of music and how music can help to tell stories.

Students suggested different moods, including happy, sad, cranky, and proud, then Josh, Jacob, and Luke would perform them. Josh also introduced his many percussion instruments, from drums and chimes to bundt pans that he borrows from his grandmother's kitchen.

While Jacob read his original poem "Ode to Hoagies" students had to listen for sounds on the keyboard and percussion instruments that helped tell the story. The musicians also added sounds to Roe's Pre-Kindergarten class's recitation of two poems about the cold and snow.

Before finishing, the group welcomed a few special guests on-stage, including Head of Lower and Middle School Ryan, music teacher Katherine, and Josh's son and 2nd grade student Julian.
