Darien Headen (Associate Head of School)

Darien (he/him) is a native of Philadelphia, PA, who has always had a passion for bettering the lives of youth. Having attended Friends schools all his life, he learned very early the importance of being a lifelong learner. After receiving his B.A. in International Relations and French, from Tufts University, he began his career as an educator in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.

Following his time in Charlotte, Darien moved back to his hometown of Philadelphia, to teach middle school humanities. In May 2018, he received an M.S.Ed in Urban Education, with a concentration in law and policy from the University of Pennsylvania. Darien then went on to serve as an Assistant Principal and Director of Operations, managing schools within the Mastery Charter network. Darien also serves as an instructional coach for educators of color, as an Impact Leader through the education nonprofit, Profound Gentlemen. Additionally, Darien has been and continues to be very active in Friends education. Since graduating from Friends Select School, Darien has served as a member on Friends Select’s National Alumni Board and has promoted many causes, from school strategic and capital campaigns to the creation of affinity association for alumni.

When not playing tennis, biking, buying artwork and plants for his new home, reading French literature, listening to music, or spending time with family, Darien actively mentors Philadelphia youth and sits on several boards promoting equitable educational opportunities for the youth.
