On Wednesday, Anna's and Erica's 3rd grade classes continued their studies of the Lenape with a trip to the Penn Museum's Native American Voices exhibit. Students were able to see contemporary and historical artifacts from many Native American cultures while exploring the exhibit. There was also time to visit the rest of the museum; students particularly enjoyed the Greek and Egyptian sections.

The trip built off the 3rd grade's current unit about the Lenape. They learned about the diversity of various tribes and theories of origin as well as ways to be respectful researchers and think beyond stereotypes.

The following afternoon former 6th grade GSFS teacher Jack Briggs visited the classrooms to share his personal collection of  Lenape and Iriquois artifacts. Students were able to see and touch clothing items, musical instruments (flutes, drums, and rattles), a headdress, and cooking tools. He spoke about the life and culture of these tribes. Jack has had a life-long interest in Native American culture and history, including collecting these items and teaching about Native Americans at Friends Central for a number of years.

Next up, the 3rd grade will learn how the Lenape used their environment to meet their needs.
