4th Grade Students Present at Annual Mold Symposium

On Tuesday, the 4th grade classes attended the 36th Annual Mold Symposium. Each student designed their own experiment, made observations, wrote a lab report, created a poster outlining their findings, and presented to groups of other students and teachers at the symposium.

The experiments included:
Daniel: Does mold grow better on wet or dry bread?
Josie: Does a piece of cheese mold faster in cold or a standard condition?
Jessica: Does mold grow faster on cheese or a piece of bread?
Jesse: Will the hard food (the potato) grow better than the soft food (the tomato)?
Isabel: Does pinhead mold grow better in dark or light?
Phine: Does mold grow better on hard foods or soft foods?
Lucy: Will mold grow better in light or dark?
Talia: Will mold grow better in light or dark?
Fati: Will mold grow faster on a banana on a piece or cloth or on a banana on a petri dish?
Abel: What types of bread grow mold the best?
Ave Rose: What grows faster mold: an orange or cheese?
Matthew: Does mold grow faster on fruit or bread?
Abby: Will mold grow faster on cheese that's in a closet or on a windowsill?
Maxine: Which cheese grows more mold: Swiss or blue cheese?
Oliver: Does mold grow better in hot air or cold air?
Jules: What conditions contribute to the growth of mold: dark and cold or light and warm?
Elizabeth: Does mold grow better in cold water on a wood chip or does mold grow better in a hot container with water?
Julide: Will mold grow better on apples or carrots?
Ollie: Will mold grow faster on a kiwi with milk or a kiwi with water?
Caleb: Will mold grow on cheese in the dark or cheese in the light?
Naomi: Will two different types of food have a different type of mold color?

"I thought it was really fun because you got to see everybody's different experiments and the different foods they used. It was really cool to see them," shared 4th grade student Nandi. "

Audrey agreed, stating how much she enjoyed presenting to her peers from GSFS, Abington Friends, and Plymouth Meeting Friends. "I thought it was a lot of fun. The only time I was nervous was presenting in front of the teachers!"
