Kindergarten Classes Celebrate Chinese New Year

The Kindergarten classes are celebrating Chinese New Year! Last week they created dragon decorations, colored red envelopes, and read lots of books to learn more about Chinese culture and how people celebrate this holiday.

On Monday, the studies continued when Learning and Literacy Specialist Lehla Olson came to class to teach how to write "hello" and "dragon" in Chinese.

Lehla also explained that in the original Chinese writing, characters were meant to represent the words that they mean. Students identified in the word for dragon (long), the tail, head, and fire of the dragon. The characters that they practiced were written in modern, simplified Chinese.

In addition to learning about another culture, this exercise helped the Kindergarten students with their fine motor skills and spatial awareness - skills that are important for writing in every language.
