Lower School Students Discuss Equality at First Town Meeting
Representatives from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4 gathered this week for the first Lower School Town Meeting of the year. Their focus was on this year's all-school theme of equality. Younger students quoted the Golden Rule and the importance of respecting all people, while older students connected the discussion to recent events and issues that impact their lives.
Liana in PK-K shared that no one should ever be "erased" because their skin is darker or lighter. Victor in second grade said, "For example, If someone is transgender, don't laugh at them, just treat them how you would want to be treated."
"It was a really great discussion," shared Town Meeting facilitator and Pre-K teacher Roe. "We wanted to get across that equality is fairness, but fair is not always the same treatment for everybody." Roe noted ways that students discussed fairness in terms that were understandable at all age levels - some people wear glasses while others don't need them, sometimes students can't bring in their favorite PB&J sandwich because a classmate has a peanut allergy.
Town Meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of every month. Each class sends two new representatives to delve into the meeting's theme. Next month students will discuss Peace.
