Why I'm Participating in #GivingTuesday

By Maisha Y. Lee Pinckney '91

As Chair of Alumni Annual Giving this year, I am truly excited to see my fellow alumni being generous in support of the students and teachers at Greene Street Friends today. And as the mother of a current sixth grade student, I see the wonderful education that GSFS provides to the students here today.

Whether you attended for one year or for ten, you and I share this amazing gift, the gift of a Greene Street Friends education. GSFS prepared us for high school and college, and for the demands of the workplace and life. And now we have a new way of showing our gratitude on #GivingTuesday.

After Thanksgiving there is Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. To get away from the frenzied commercialism of the holidays it is so great to have #GivingTuesday, a global day for giving back.

We are very grateful to the many alumni who showed their support through Annual Giving last year, with gifts from $5 to thousands of dollars. All of these gifts mattered, and all of them helped to make the School’s programs and offerings better.

What I’d like to see is even more of us stepping forward to become donors. Why not?! You don’t have to break the bank, you just need to participate in a way that is meaningful to you. Perhaps you want to honor a special teacher who nurtured your love of reading or sparked your love of science, or perhaps you want to show your class spirit as you head towards a reunion. It all adds up and it’s all good!

Greene Street Friends has been around since 1855- that’s 160 years. What if 160 of us donated this year? What if we all donated on #GivingTuesday? Surely there are that many of us who feel grateful and are willing to share a few dollars for a worthy cause that we love!

Friend, please join me in showing your support on or before #GivingTuesday by going to greenestreetfriends.org/giving.

Go #GivingTuesday! Go Greene Street Friends!
